THE NEW CHAIR

For many years now, I wished I had a reclining chair. I have sat in quite a few and even slept in one for a week. Such marvelous inventions they are. My problem was that I never had the room capacity to accommodate a recliner because I had always had the traditional living room set. You know, the matching sofa, love seat and overstuffed armchair.

Now that my sofa set is thirty years old, and looking like it has had a hard life, I decided it was time to get new furniture. This time, I decided to do things a bit differently. Instead of the traditional set like I used to have, I decided to get a recliner and perhaps one or two love seats over time. Most important to me was to replace the chair first. Once I had made that decision, I was practically drooling as I thought about getting a recliner at last.

After searching for the perfect chair since last summer, I finally found one that was exactly what I was looking for. It’s electric. Wow! How lucky am I? A few weeks ago, I got my new chair and had the old armchair taken away. I felt like a queen as I lounged luxuriously in my new chair. It’s so comfortable that I frequently fall asleep in it while watching television.

One of my favorite shows on television is “Cops”. Usually it starts around six o’clock and goes on until the wee hours. I think I fell asleep around eight o’clock. Around nine, I heard a noise that woke me up. I didn’t move, but I did open my eyes. To my utter shock and dismay, I saw eight people standing around my parlor. Some of them had drinks in their hands. All men and women were dressed semi casually in business clothes. The men wore light colored suits and the women wore straight skirts and blouses. I couldn’t see their faces except for a profile of one of the women. The scene kind of looked like a cocktail break during some business seminar.

I tried to make sense of what was going on. The ghostly people did not seem to be aware that I was even there. Once my brain registered the scene that was playing out before me, I muttered, “Oh crap!” and instantly the room was clear again. It was all over within a few seconds.

I got up and went to check to see if my door was locked. It was. I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down to mull over what I had just seen. I looked down at myself and realized that I was wearing my ratty old nightgown. My goodness, I’m not even safe in my own apartment. I really must get rid of that old rag or I’ll be the talk of the spirit world when I get there myself.

THE END

Hmmmm – very interesting. So glad no one is showing up in my place. I need my sleep and would hate to be entertained by an impromptu cocktail party. 🙂
